I write here about an important issue: PAIN! So many people live with it and don’t have to. This is the research, these are “the facts.” Do something for yourself and the ones you care about. Learn more by reading on (I have each of these journal articles on the check in counter at the office).
The estimated 50+ million Americans are living with chronic pain. In a British Medical Journal study in 2001, of 1005 participants 15% had widespread pain and 48% had local pain.
Many people in pain try an aspirin, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or other Nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDs. Most don’t know that 36,500 people bled to death in 1999 from Ibuprofen… that these drugs are consistently on the 15 leading causes of death lists… and that their side effects include death, cancer, liver failure, and more.
Study by Dr. Sarah Marshall, USC, 2005 on 114,460 women found that “women who took ibuprofen daily for 5 years were about 50% more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those who did not take the drug regularly”. “Women who took aspirin daily for at least 5 years were80% more likely…”
Journal of National Cancer Institute 2005: “Long term use of ibuprofen or aspirin use may raise the risk of breast cancer.”
Associated Press 2005: “The NSAID users were dying at twice the rate of others from heart related problems.”
European Heart Journal 2006: “Conclusion: use of all NSAIDs is associated with a modest risk of first time MI (myocardial infarction, heart attack).”One time use increased MI risk by 40%.
British Medical Journal 2006: “Selective COX 2 inhibitors are associated with a moderate increase in the risk of vascular events, as are high dose regimens of ibuprofen and diclfenac…”
Hypertension 2005: “These results confirm… the frequency of acetaminophen and NSAID use increaes the risk of incident hypertension.” This risk was as high as 370% compared to non-users.
Newhouse News Service 2006: “About a fifth of US adults, or 45 million people, take acetaminophen in any week.” “Acetaminophen caused 42% of the acute liver failures in 1998-2003.” Hepatology 2005 “Roughly half of acetaminophen overdoses seemed accidental. Those patients said theytook an average of 7,500 milligrams a day, usually for less than a week.”
There are better answers!
Surgical Neurology 2006: After an average of 75 days on essential fatty acids 59% of pain patients discontinued to take their prescription NSAID medications. 88% stated that they were satisfied with their improvement and would continue to take the fish oils. There were NO SIGNIFICANT SIDE EFFECTS reported.
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics 2005: Chiropracticshowed long term improvement in pain better than with drugs (Celebrex or Vioxx) and better than acupuncture.
Spine 2003: Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Medication, Acupuncture, and Spinal Manipulation found 18%, 15%, 47% respective improvement in general health status. And 5%, 9.4%, 27.3% asymptomatic within 9 weeks, respectively. Thus, chiropractic spinal adjusting was better than 5 times more effective than the leading pain drugs Celebrex or Vioxx.
