A tongue tie and/or lip tie can be an overwhelming problem for both mom and baby. At Kuty Chiropractic, we want to help you and your baby establish a good long-term breastfeeding relationship. Unfortunately, tongue and lip ties can interfere causing nipple pain and damage, slow weight gain, and lots of feeding frustration. Ties can also affect swallowing, reflux, feeding, speech, and dental health. In baby, we inspect the mouth for signs of lip and tongue tie and take a detailed history.
Some signs of Tongue Tie or Lip Tie in infants:
- History of poor suck
- Shallow latch
- Clicking sounds
- Ineffective milk transfer
- Poor weight gain or weight loss
- Gas or reflux
- Fussiness at the breast or arching away
- Frequent sliding off the breast
- Flattening of the nipple
- Coughing or choking while feeding
- Spilling milk from sides of mouth
- Poor tongue movement
We take a hands-on approach to pediatric chiropractic care for infants with tongue tie and/or lip tie. We work inside and outside the mouth on stretching tight muscles and use myofascial techniques to release adhesions that restrict jaw, tongue, and lip movement. We assess and treat for uneven neck movement and restrictions in the neck joints with safe, effective chiropractic adjustments. These adjustments are tailored toward infants and the techniques vary by age. We also do therapeutic exercises in the office and assign some for home. Tummy time is a great place to start to build a healthy spine and develop the appropriate muscles for feeding and head control. We have lots of fun exercises for infants to engage certain movements to help them. Last, we work cooperatively with lactation specialists, pediatricians, ENTs, and dentists to give you a health team that has you and your baby’s best health in mind.

Mother’s testimonial: “I was nervous about chiropractic care for a 5 month old, but it has been the best part of our post tongue tie release. He is nursing better and moving around better too.” – Desyre MacMillan
Mother’s Testimonial: “I went to a chiropractor for 2 weeks and we saw results. My son immediately loosened up and benefited from the exercises. … I think that the chiropractic care was just another stop a long the way to our now exclusive breastfed journey. We also had ties, supplemented, pumped, etc. The chiropractic care also provided a level of mom support that was really needed. We went to Dr. Jolene Kuty and are thankful for the care she gave our family.” -Sarah

My granddaughter just had surgery for a lip and tongue tie. She tends to only want to turn her head one way so my daughter was told to take her to a chiropractor to help that. How many visits should she get before seeing a difference.

Every situation is different. Chiropractic care can be very helpful to treat torticollis or favoring one side. We see many kids with tongue tie who also have neck tightness. Some kids respond quickly in a handful of visits over a couple weeks of care, while others require a few months of support as they develop. It is such a critical time in development. I usually see some improvements at each visit, being able to move more, less withdrawing or pain response, tolerating tummy time, or less crying. Congratulations, Grandma! We’re here to help.
