It has been estimated by Art Croft, head of the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, that as many as 3 million whiplash injuries occur in the U.S. each year. More than 1 in 100 people will get a whiplash injury this year alone. Risk of injury is generally higher for rear impact collision, but, of course, individual risk factors and crash details can make injury higher. Getting treatment early is important to helping improve your chances of recovery.Thankfully, cars are getting safer in crash-worthiness. We also continue to research ways to improve treatment for those injured in these crashes. Many people suffer with chronic daily pain and disability from an initial whiplash injury from years ago. A broad scope approach to treatment and rehabilitation can help you recover from a new, or even old, whiplash injury. If you’ve been in a motor vehicle collision, don’t take the common passive role, and wait for it to get better on its own. Act now and begin your rehabilitation. We want to help you to make a quick and complete recovery.

Whiplash can cause chronic pain, it did for me. I tried all kinds of things but chiropractic adjustments and therapies were the only thing that helped me. I’ve been pain free for awhile but it was so bad I could barely stand it. Chiropractic saved me.

Dr. Kuty, in regards to people being more unstable in the neck after a whiplash type accident. Do you ever use x-rays?To me, x-rays capture the loss of integretiy of the cervical spine after a whiplash type accident. Perhaps not causing true instability, in which the medical profession regards as an indicator for emergency surgery, but creating hypermobility.I’ve seen x-rays of whiplash patients, and am quite suprised to see how the cervical spine motion is affected from these accidents. What are your thoughts on this?
Dr. Jolene Kuty says
While I am judicious about when to take xrays, I will often take xrays in a case of trauma such as a car accident. We are able to see signs of ligamentous instability particularly in the upper neck. This is an important source of pain that needs to be addressed therefore we take xrays.

I think it is also important to understand that this mechanism of injury not purely hyperextension and hyperflexion. There is also tremendous amount of compression, which coupled with the extension creates shear force. This special force damages the supporting ligaments of the neck, creating the opportunity advancement of the degeneration of the neck, and altering the normal curve of the neck. Thanks for the post Dr. Kuty, this is a very important topic that the general public needs to be more aware of, and how damaging low impacts can really be.

I agree strongly that you meed to see a chiropractor after whiplash. the small muscles being used for proprioception control joint movement. I recently read an article on the Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor muscle. It is a fairly weak muscle for cervical extension but it may serve instead to monitor the dura mater and keep it from folding during cervical extension. That process helps to maintain the integrity of the flow of spinal fluid through central canal during upper cervical spine. I have no doubt that injury to the small postural muscles of the neck can affect balance, load and posture. I think you are right on target.
